Present

The Bible tells one great story through seven covenants—solemn agreements between God and humanity. Each covenant builds on the last, gradually revealing God's plan to save and unite all people through Jesus Christ.

Covenant with Adam

Marriage and Creation

In the Beginning • Creation

God creates a perfect world and establishes the first covenant through marriage, giving humanity stewardship of all creation. Though Adam and Eve break this covenant through disobedience, God immediately promises redemption. The pattern is set: human failure, divine faithfulness.

Covenant with Noah

A New Beginning

The Flood • c. 2300 BC (traditional)

As humanity spirals into violence and wickedness, God grieves but finds one righteous man: Noah. Through the ark and flood, God judges sin while saving a faithful remnant. The rainbow becomes an eternal sign that God will work through other means to restore creation.

Covenant with Abraham

A Chosen Family

The Patriarchs • c. 2000-1800 BC

God narrows His focus to one man and his family. Abraham believes God's impossible promise of a son, and this faith is 'credited to him as righteousness.' The covenant includes circumcision as a sign, pointing forward to a deeper circumcision of the heart.

Covenant with Moses

The Law and the Nation

Exodus and Sinai • c. 1446-1406 BC

God rescues His people from Egyptian slavery through mighty acts, culminating in the Passover and Red Sea crossing. At Mount Sinai, He gives the Law—not to earn salvation (already given!) but to show how a redeemed people should live. The elaborate worship system foreshadows Christ.

Covenant with David

The Eternal Kingdom

The United Kingdom • c. 1010-970 BC

God raises up David—a shepherd, warrior, poet, and king—to lead Israel. To David, God makes an astonishing promise: his dynasty will last forever. Though David sins grievously, he repents sincerely, becoming a model of faith. His throne awaits its ultimate occupant.

The Prophetic Promise

Hope Through Exile

Exile and Return • c. 722-400 BC

As covenant failure leads to exile, God raises up prophets with messages of judgment AND hope. They announce a New Covenant that will solve the problem of the human heart. The Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 will bear the people's sins. The exile ends, but the prophetic promises await their fulfillment.

Fulfillment and the Church

Gospels to the Present • AD 1 - Present

In the fullness of time, God sends His Son. Jesus fulfills every covenant: He is the New Adam, the true Israel, the Prophet like Moses, the Son of David, the Suffering Servant, and the Passover Lamb. Through His death and resurrection, He establishes the New Covenant, open to all nations. The Church continues His mission until He returns.
